The main feud heading into King of the Ring was between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kane over the WWF Championship. The footage of that fall has since become one of the most used and viewed video in professional wrestling history. A couple of minutes into the match, The Undertaker threw Mankind off of the top of the cell, which was a full 16 feet, onto the Spanish Announce table. This event produced arguably the most famous Hell in a Cell match of all time, pitting The Undertaker against Mankind. Featured matches on the undercard included the KOTR tournament final between Ken Shamrock and The Rock, which Shamrock won to win the tournament and a Tag team match for the WWF Tag Team Championship between The New Age Outlaws defeating The New Midnight Express, to retain the championship. The other main match was a Hell in a Cell match featuring The Undertaker defeating Mankind. The main event was a First Blood match featuring Kane defeating Steve Austin for the WWF Championship. Nine matches were scheduled on the event's card. It took place on Jat the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This will be very much the case for tonight’s winner. What this video package serves to remind us is that the event was often used as a launch pad toward greatness for the winners (with the aforementioned exceptions). We open with a montage of past King of the Ring winners – limited to those who have won the pay-per-view incarnation of the event, and excluding the ill-booked winners Mabel and Billy Gunn respectively. The event is a joint RAW and SmackDown! production, but RAW’s familiar announce team of Jerry Lawler and ‘Good Old JR’ Jim Ross host, with SmackDown!’s Tazz and Michael Cole around to provide background information before the SmackDown! matches.
The event would also fast track a new competitor into the main event slot less than a year after making his debut.
